Bangladeshis living in the UK and elsewhere in the world celebrated the 45th Independence and National Day on Thursday to mark the declaration of independence. The country has made remarkable progress in a number of areas over the years after independence although there is a long way to go to attain advanced stage of development. Bangladesh’s independence was declared on this day in 1971 following a crackdown on the people by the Pakistani military on the night of 25 March. The country finally became independent after a nine-month bloody war on 16 December 1971. Millions of people made supreme sacrifices to build the first independent nation of mostly Bangla-speaking people and put Bangladesh on the world map. Many organisations in London and elsewhere in the UK are scheduled to hold programmes to observe the day. Non-resident Bangladeshis in different countries around the world, too, have chalked out various programme to mark the day. Both the president and the prime minister of Bangladesh greeted the countrymen on the occasion. In his message, the President of Bangladesh said the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman cherished the dream of transforming Bangladesh into ‘Sonar Bangla’. The declaration of independence was made in the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In her message, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina said the independence earned through the sacrifice of millions of people is the greatest achievement of Bangalee nation.“To make the achievement meaningful, all would have to know the true history of the Liberation War, retain the spirit the independence. It would have to be spread generation to generations,” she added.
