Glyn Robbins sends down first ball

58Glyn Robbins, Left Unity – TUSC general election candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow, was invited to bowl the first ball of the season by the Camel Cricket team (picture attached).  The game, between the Camel CC and Black Dog CC took place in a chilly Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon (19th April).  Glyn spent many years playing rugby and more recently, practicing martial arts, but hadn’t played cricket for 30 years.  He said:

‘I was really pleased to be asked, but a bit nervous because I hadn’t played for so long.  Fortunately the ball was more or less on target and I only had to bowl one!’

The Camel team are based in a local pub on Globe Road, Bethnal Green, near where Glyn lives.  But there’s a serious side to the fun.  Glyn continued:

‘I love cricket and played a lot when I was young, but there aren’t enough decent facilities for people to play in Tower Hamlets.  There isn’t a single grass pitch in the whole borough, even though lots of people love the game.  With all the cuts in public services, I’m worried opportunities to play and enjoy sport are under threat.’
