Growers eye bumper jackfruit yield in Sylhet

6Growers in 12 upazilas in the Sylhet district are expecting a bumper production of jackfruit this year because of the prevailing favourable weather condition.

After excellent budding in the maximum number of trees, the tender jackfruit is becoming bigger in size this season, predicting an abundant yield.

The jackfruit farming brought about a silent revolution in the district as many farmers have become self-reliant by cultivating the most delicious and juicy fruits in recent years.

Now the farmers are engaged in their orchards for nursing the Jackfruits tree and harvesting will start from the next month May.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 710 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation this year in the district.

In the meantime, the jackfruit traders from different parts of the country have reached different areas in the district and started purchasing the fruit gardens in advance like the previous years.

There are 120 jackfruit trees in my garden and I am expecting to earn Tk at least 2.5 lakh as profit if the price of the fruit remains good like previous year,” said Jamal ahmed of Baga village in Gulap gonj upazila.

When contacted, Deputy Director of DAE Kayrul basher said jackfruit cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers as the soil and climate condition of the district are very suitable for the farming; moreover it has already proved more profitable than other crops.
