52Bangla Mirror Desk:

Southall Mela is a free, family-themed event taking place on Sunday June 7 2015 in  Southall Park, which coincides with and incorporates the Bangladeshi festival of

Boishaki. Organiser and local businessman Shofiqul Alam had the vision of a free outdoor  festival which would reflect Southall’s diversity and community cohesion, while celebrating the rich fabric of culture that Asians have brought to food, fashion and  music, which he has brought to life in Southall Mela. Visitors flock to Southall from

all over the UK as the epicentre of Asian culture and many view it as a ‘home away  from home’ with its shops, restaurants and attractions. Southall Mela aims to  represent the best of Asian culture and have stalls that are family-friendly, fun fair

rides, a cultural programme infused with unique live entertainment that represents the East-West fusion that reflects the British Asian identity and provides a fun-packed

day for all communities.  The event begins at 12:30 with a procession of over 100 performers who will be

dressed in traditional Bengali attire and start the event off with a taste of what’s to  come with a programme that begins with Bangla artistes then moves onto Hindi,

Punjabi, Pakistani and more.  The event’s theme of diversity is reflected in the many stalls and attractions on offer  with a special focus on the Boishaki (Bangla New Year) celebration. The event has

free entry, is an alcohol-free environment and has many children’s attractions  including an appearance by two of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a children’s

circus skills workshop, henna painting, a children’s programme on stage and much

more. Southall Mela concludes with a spectacular evening of live musical entertainment

which includes performances by bhangra supergroup B21, the Bengali superstar  Mumzy Stranger who will be performing his latest hit song Diamond Girl with special

guest and YouTube phenomenon Adam Saleh, with the event closing by a free  concert with the legendary ragamuffin Apache Indian. There will also be

performances in the afternoon by popular artistes such as Shaful Khan, Adil Hashmi  and SIB, Zack Knight, Khiza and Soni J and others.
