CJ joins clean Dhaka drive

42Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Tuesday urged the authorities concerned to free Dhaka City from pollution and said he would not mind walking to work every day to help keep the city free from pollution. Speaking at a cleanliness campaign organised by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and the Supreme Court at the apex court premises, the Chief Justice requested DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon to work for a cleaner Dhaka city so that it would get relief from environment pollution. Citing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s experiment of allowing odd or even numbered cars on the streets each day, and his decision to go to work on foot, the chief justice said he would love to do the same to curb pollution. “It is important to keep the Dhaka city free from environment pollution and save the capital from vehicles smokes. I will walk to my workplace, if needed,” the Chief Justice said. Mayor Khokon said that 2016 would be the year to clean Dhaka as the 400-year-old city is increasingly becoming unlivable due to pollution. Registrar General of the Supreme Court Registrar was also present, among others, at the programme.
