Bumper wheat production likely in Sylhet

37The farmers are expecting bumper wheat production in the Sylhet district this season.
The plants in the fields are already in full bloom.
According to field sources, timely plantation of seeds accompanied by the current cold spell has been the main reason for possible bumper production of the cash crop.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sylhet office sources said, the cultivation of wheat has already exceeded the farming target. The farmers have cultivated wheat on 3,000 hectares of land against the fixed target of 2,000 hectares of land.
Sala Uddin, DD of BADC Sylhet said the farmers have been showing more interest in farming wheat after getting repeated bumper production and fair price in recent years.
He said, necessary training, assistance, inputs, quality seeds, technologies and agri-loans have been provided to the farmers for making wheat farming programme a success.
Wheat production is very important to ensuring food security as it is the second most important cereal in the country after rice, he added.
