Supreme Court uphold death sentence of media personality and ex-central Shibir President Mir Quasem Ali; Protest meeting organised by Save Bangladesh in London

1The Supreme Court of Bangladesh upheld a death sentence on Tuesday imposed by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICTB) on a media personality and ex-central president of Bangladesh Islami Chattra-Shibir for killing of a freedom fighter during the 1971 war of independence.  Save Bangladesh a UK-based human rights organisation especially working for Bangladesh called for a protest meeting on Tuesday to protest at the verdict in Altab Ali Park, London.

Save Bangladesh chairman Barrister Nazrul Islam presided over the meeting, while directed by the Barrister Bodioul Alom.  A large number of people from different walk of life gathered in the meeting.  Among the participants Bangladesh National Party (BNP) UK president M. A. Malek, President Jomite-Ulama UK  Mufti Sodoruddin, Jamate Islami Europe spokesperson Abu Bokkor Mulla,  Journalist and human rights worker Amimul Ahsan Tanim, Journalist Towhid Ahmed was presented and delivered their speech. In president speech, Barrister Nazrul Islam said, with the verdict of Mir Quasem Ali it has been proofed once again that Awami-league government making all sort of conspiracy to blame Jamat-e-Islami leader with fabricated cases. He also said a witness of the 1971 incident born in 1977. This proof how unfair the tribunal is.

Jomiot leader Mufti Sodor said in his speech the present government Awami-league is an illegal and evil government.

Journalist and human rights worker Amimul Ahsan Tanim said in his speech, Mir Quasem Ali is a media personality who is a founder of Digontta TV and national daily Naga Digontto.  Mir Quasem Ali today’s death sentence is a sort of consequence of all previous killing, torture, imprisonment and assassination to media personality and opposition parties in Bangladesh. Government use their different forces like police, RAB to stop free speech and unlawful killing of opposition party leader, activists and journalists.

Bangladesh Jamat-e-Islami Spoke person Abu Bokkor Molla said, Mir Quasem Ali’s alleged case is a totally false allegation and it is one of the most hatred fabricated case. And he also stated Amnesty International said that judicial system has significant error.
