Former Habiganj councillor killed by police gunfire

Yunus Miah, a former municipal councillor, has been killed in police gunfire in Habiganj’s Chunarughat.

The incident occurred in Magurunda village in Paikpara Union around midnight on Sunday, said Chunarughat Police OC Azmiruzzaman.

Yunus, 40, was a former ward councillor of Ward-9 in the Chunarughat Municipality and was involved in drug trafficking, police said.

“Yunus and three or four others were taking yaba around midnight. We went to the area to arrest the drug traffickers when they attacked us.”

“Police opened fire in self-defence. Yunus was injured and taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.”

SI Atiur Rahman was injured in the raid and received medical care at the hospital, Azmiruzzaman said.
