The High Court (HC) on Tuesday granted interim bail to Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman in six sedition and defamation cases file for his alleged derogatory remarks about the country’s independence and sovereignty and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
The cases were filed with several police stations in Kushtia, Dinajpur, Barisal, Jessore, Tangail and Kurigram districts.
The HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hassan granted the bail after hearing the bail petitions filed by Mahmudur Rahman.
The court also ordered him to surrender before the court within eight weeks.
Advocate Adilur Rahman Shuvra stood for Mahmudur Rahman while Advocate Dr Md Bashirullah represented the state.
On December 1 last, Mahmudur Rahman at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital alleged that Bangladesh is not an independent country as it has no sovereignty although it has land and population.
“Bangladesh is now ‘a colony of India’. According to the political science, Bangladesh can’t be considered as a state. Sheikh Mujib had killed country’s democracy and independence of mass media and buried it,” he had said.
