It looks like we’re heading for a Brexit based on the internal squabbles of the Tory Party, not the practical facts on the ground says GMB
GMB, Britain’s general union, says Downing Street’s pledge to leave the customs union is designed to save the Prime Minister’s skin, rather than UK jobs.
Number 10 has insisted Britain will leave the EU customs union after Brexit amid claims of Tory disunity over the UK-EU future relationship.
Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary, said:
“It increasingly looks like the Prime Minister is choosing to leave the Customs Union to save her own skin, with little regard to the impact on UK jobs.
“The future of our ports, manufacturing and our trade with the Ireland will be hugely affected outside a Customs Union, yet these issues are seemingly absent from Government thinking.
“If this is indeed the Prime Minister’s decision – where is the plan for jobs and our ports? “Industry, communities and livelihoods are at stake, we cannot continue with this level of uncertainty.
“It looks like we’re heading for a Brexit based on the internal squabbles of the Tory Party, not the practical facts on the ground.
“No wonder ministers don’t want to share their impact assessments, it’s a risky road their taking us down, those reports won’t be pretty.”
