Mayor John Biggs’ Lack of Leadership in Dealing with the Snow Must be Questioned

Councillor Ohid Ahmed, Aspire’s Shadow Lead for Resources and Community Safety, said:

“It’s not so much about the snow, it’s about the lack of leadership in response to it. Only this morning, I witnessed an accident in Wapping due to this lack of preparedness and failure of leadership. I visited Wapping, Stepney and Whitechapel and witnessed the suffering of our residents – the council seem to have abandoned them in this severe weather condition by failing to do the most basic things, like putting salt on the Whitechapel High Street footpath where people are falling and serious accidents waiting to happen. The elderly and vulnerable residents are suffering the most. Under Mayor John Biggs, the council was ill-prepared for snowfall despite warnings. We continue to see the usual abrogation of responsibility by Mr Biggs – this is unacceptable. We have had snow before and we should have reviewed how we responded then. Under John Biggs, the Council Tax has gone up by 9% yet the service delivery for our residents has nose-dived. We also want to explore how communities could be involved in dealing with snow problems. In certain areas community partners and local leaders could coordinate and possibly help but the council must take the lead. We must review and put in place urgent measures based on this learning, to adequately prepare Tower Hamlets for future inclement weather.”
