Former Sylhet 2 MP and Sylhet District Awami League General Secretary, Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury said the development of Biswanath Balaganj Osmani Nagar was his political priority. He was speaking at a large Reception Meeting held on 5 March 2018 at The Atrium, Banglatown, East London in honour of him organised by the NRBs of Biswanath, Balagonj and Osmani Nagar living in the UK. He said, as an MP for five years, he contributed towards the development, especially roads, bridges, and electrification in the area. He added he was able to bring peace and stability in the area by getting rid off gangsterism.
At the meeting chaired by Alhaj Aftab Ali, the former general secretary of the Bangladesh Welfare Association, and jointly conducted by Awami League’s Office Secretary Shah Shamim Ahmed & Balaganj Education Trust’s Chairman Robin Pal, Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury said that due to successful Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh’s development and prosperity is in advancement. He said, ‘To continue prosperity to build a better Bangladesh we must strengthen Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s hands and ensure her victory in the next election.’
He praised Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, daughters of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for standing by him. He said no war criminals or collaborators will be able to snatch the seat of Biswanath Balaganj Osmani Nagar from Awami League. ‘Insha’Allah, as your servant, I will receive nomination of with your support,’ said Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury. He urged all pro-liberation expatriates to visit Bangladesh and work towards ensuring Awami League’s victory at the forth coming general election.
Shofiq Chowdhury highlighted the BNP/Jamaat’s misrule and said that Bangladesh had become a hub of terrorism and militancy during their rule. They looted thousands of crores of Takas of the state, even the orphan’s money had been misappropriated. The notorious Tarek Zia from London is engaged in anti-Bangladesh conspiracy. In his indignation an attack was carried out at London’s Bangladesh High Commission. Shofiq Chowdhury also condemned the recent attack on Shahjalal University’s lecturer Dr Zafar Iqbal.
Speaking through teleconference, the renowned journalist & Amar Ekushey song composer Abdul Gaffar Choudhury recalled the family tradition of Shofiq Chowdhury and recalled his family’s contribution in the War of Liberation. He further said as the trustee of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he is the only qualified candidate and wished for his success.
Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs, President of United Kingdom Awami League Sultan Mahmud Shariff spoke on the occasion as special guests. Alhaj Shamsuddin Khan, Awami League’s former chairman, Awami League vice-president Alhaj Jalal Uddin, Awami League General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruk, Brick Lane Mosque Chairman Alhaj Sajjad Miah, former & current councillors and representatives of Biswanath Education Trust, Balaganj Upazilla Samity, Manchester Awami League, Northampton, Coventry, Oldham, North Wales, Luton Awami League, Jubo League, Birmingham, Norwich Awami League, Ipswich Awami league, Essex Awami League, London Awami League, Workers League and Volunteers League and others spoke in support of Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury at the event.
