Habiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Bidhan Tripura speaking to journalists in Habiganj

Habiganj District Correspondent : Two sub-inspectors of Habiganj sadar model police station were closed over the torture of UK-based Channel-S journalist Sirajul Islam Jibon.

Habiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Bidhan Tripura said it while expressing sorrow over the incident at Habiganj Press Club auditorium on Thursday noon (June 7).

He said anyone involved in the torture of the journalist will not be spared. SI Rakibul Islam and SI Abdul Mukid Chowdhury have been already closed. The entire police force can not take responsibility for any individual policeman’s misdeed.

Urging journalists and policemen to unify, he also said people in these two occupations must work together to develop the society and country.

Senior journalists and police officer of Habiganj were also present the meeting.

Police arrested Sirajul Islam Jibon, district assistant correspondent of Channel S, early Friday from his residence at Gorurbazar in Habiganj town, said his fellow colleagues.

Later, they tortured him in custody, leaving him severely injured, it is alleged. Police took him to a hospital in the morning, saying he was injured in a mob beating.

Local journalists said that police implicated Jibon in a “false case to extort money from him.”

Following the incident, journalists blocked a road in front of Habiganj Sadar police station in the town, protesting the torture of Jibon. Later they also vowed to boycott police and all their news.
