As the new football season kicks off, teams across the borough are being urged to get their applications in for the prestigious annual football tournament, the Mayor’s Cup.
Hosted by the council’s sports and physical activity team, last year’s tournament attracted more than 1,000 players in 70 teams and gained sponsorship from local businesses to support grassroots football.
John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said: “Sport has an amazing ability to connect people of all ages and backgrounds as well as encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle. I’m delighted to again support the Mayor’s Cup tournament which will promote grassroots sport.”
The dates for this year’s tournament are:
Saturday 31 August – Youth Heats (U13 – U16) – Victoria Park.
Sunday 1 September – Adult Heats – Victoria Park.
Saturday 7 September – Junior Heats & Finals (U8 – U12) – Mile End Stadium mini pitches.
Sunday 8 September – Youth & Adult Finals – Mile End Stadium.
Cllr Sabina Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Culture, the Arts and Brexit said: “We saw how this year’s Women’s World Cup generated much excitement amongst fans. It may have even inspired the next generation of young people to take up the beautiful game. I encourage all eligible organisations to get their entries in for the Mayor’s Cup before the deadline.”
