Bangladeshi man shot dead

A Bangladeshi man has died after being shot in what police believe is a “targeted attack”.  Police say

an ambulance was called to a shop on Markham Avenue where a man had gunshot injuries. They  believe he might have been shot in his car and then gone to the shop for help.  Five persons were  arrested including two males, aged 15 and 16 for suspicion of preventing the course of justice. Another three males, aged 17, 19 and 20, were arrested on Tuesday in suspicion of murder.
The 33-year-old Shuel Ali Hussain was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but later died.

He was shot in Pasture Road, Harehills, on Monday 9th March night.

Police were contacted just after 9pm by the ambulance service after the 33-year-old staggered into

the shop in Markham Avenue with serious injuries.

A forensic post mortem held on Tuesday showed that Mr Hussain, from Harehills, died as a result of

a single gunshot wound to the abdomen..

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Snow, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team,

said: “I have visited Mr Hussain’s family today and they are understandably devastated at losing him

in such sudden and violent circumstances.

“The investigation remains ongoing and we are continuing to search a number of addresses in

Harehills and examine a number of scenes in the area of the incident.

“Mr Hussain was shot in his silver Vauxhall Astra, which was parked in Pasture Road near to the

junction with Back Airlie Avenue, and then managed to make his way to the Faizan Khan

Supermarket in Markham Avenue from where the emergency services were contacted at about

9pm.

“I would still like hear from anyone who witnessed any part of the incident in those locations or the

circumstances leading up to it. I would also like to hear from anyone who has any information that

could assist the investigation.”

said: “Although our enquiries are at a relatively early stage, we believe this has been a targeted

attack on the victim.

“There are a number of scenes in place in the area at this time and our enquiries are ongoing. A

silver Vauxhall Astra was found abandoned in Pasture Road, near to the junction with Back Airlie

Avenue. We believe this was the victim’s vehicle and was where the shooting took place.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw that vehicle at that location

any time between 8pm and 9pm last night. We would also like to hear from anyone who saw the

victim in Markham Avenue around the time of the incident or who has any information that could

assist the investigation.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team are mounting extra patrols in the area to

reassure the local community.”
