At least eight people, including the manager and a security guard of a bank, were killed and 20 others injured during a robbery committed in broad daylight at the Kathgora Bazar branch of the Commerce Bank in Ashulia, a garments factory hub, north of Dhaka on Tuesday. Witnesses and police said that a band of about 12 to 15 dacoits masquerading as clients entered the bank at 2:30pm and took the security guard and manager of the bank hostage at gun point. They had come on motor bikes, and lobbed bombs and fired gunshots to scare threats away.
The deceased are bank manager Waliullah, 45, Monir, 60, Zillur Rahman, bank customer Palash, 38, security guard Badrul, 38, Nur Mohammad, 23, and Zamir Ali, 45.
The another deceased was a robber who was killed in a mass beating. Details about the robber could not be known immediately.
Grocer Monir Hossain and businessman Zillur, who rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of bombs and gunshots, succumbed to bullet injuries sustained while attempting to nab the dacoits along with local people. The local mosque raised an alarm through its loudspeakers, urging the people to catch the robbers. In their desperate bid to flee the scene, the robbers began to fire indiscriminately, leaving the Monir and Zillur dead and several others injured.
“Two dacoits were caught and one was beaten to death by the people who rushed in ignoring gunfires and bomb explosions,” ASP Russel Sheikh told reporters.
Some 20 people were hit by bullets at that time. Of them, three died at the same hospital immediate after they were admitted and two died at 8:30pm while undergoing treatment, he added. In the meantime, two robbers were caught in the Jirabo-Bishmile area by locals while they were fleeing on a motorcycle, and another from the Durgapur area.
The angry mob then burnt their motorcycles and handed over one surviving dacoit to police. The critically injured have been taken to the Savar Enam hospital. Police have set up check-posts at different points on the Bishmile-Jirabo Road in its hunt for the dacoits. Police have also recovered a bag containing Tk 5,94,255, which was left behind by the dacoits. The looted cash was recovered by police while trying to nab the rest of the dacoits.
