At least one person was killed when an old building collapsed in the premises of the Indian consulate in the Nepalese capital, reports IANS.
The dead person was a Nepalese national, according to a journalist based here
In Kathmandu, there were reports of damage to large number of houses.
‘Himal’ magazine’s Editor Kanak Mani Dixit told CNN that a tall landmark building in Kathmandu called Dadarah had completely collapsed. Many other buildings were badly damaged.
Dixit told CNN that villages in central Nepal had reported much damage but could not provide details of casualties.
An American tourist Jonathanm Khoo told CNN he had seen old buildings collapse but was not sure of casualties.
In Dhaka and Calcutta, residents of high-rise buildings were seen running down in panic as apartments swung.
Early reports also suggest damage to buildings in the hills of the tea-producing region of Darjeeling.
