BNP chief Khaleda Zia, 37 others charged with Jatrabari arson attack

36Detectives today pressed charges against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and 37 others for Jatrabari arson attack on January 23 that killed a person and burned 27 others.
The Detective Branch of police that carried out the investigation into the incident submitted separate charge sheets in two cases — one for killing and the other for hurling petrol bombs — to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka.
The other accused include — BNP joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman and Rizvi Ahmed, and Khaleda’s Special Assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
Twenty eight people suffered burns as two petrol bombs thrown by suspected blockaders exploded inside a bus at Jatrabari on January 23. One of the victims died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on February 1.
A day after the incident, Jatrabari police filed the cases against 68 BNP-Jamaat leaders.
Though the BNP chief was not accused in the case, the first information report filed with Jatrabari Police Station mentioned that the accused carried out the attack on instructions by Khaleda to enforce a nationwide indefinite blockade from January 6.
