Prices of vegetables soar in Sylhet

Untitled-1Prices of vegetables have gone up in Sylhet district following a series of seasonal storms lashed the area. The storm with heavy rainfall destroyed vegetables in the field in Sadar, Dakshin Surma , Biswanath and Gulapgong upazilas on April 18 and April 20. The prices of vegetables have soared at Bandor Bazaar, Subhanigate Bazaar, Mira Bazaar and amborkhana Bazaar.

Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Sylhet said vegetable on about 350 hectares of land were totally damaged and those on about 1,050 ha were partially damaged by the storms. In the retail markets, brinjal (aubergine) is selling at Tk 50 per kg against only Tk20 three weeks ago. Cucumber is selling at Tk 25 per kg while it was Tk 20, ladies finger is being sold at Tk 40 per kg afainst Tk 30, bitter gourd is selling at Tk 40, but its price was Tk 30. Potato is now being sold at Tk 20 against Tk15. Last year, during this time brinjal was selling at Tk 15 per kg, cucumber at Tk 10 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 20 per kg, ladies finger at Tk 15 per kg and potato at Tk 15 per kg.
