Turmoil at SUST over derogatory comments against Zafar Iqbal

74An unstable situation is prevailing on the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) over derogatory comments made by a local lawmaker against professor of computer science and engineering department of the university Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
yesterday afternoon, a good number of teachers and students formed a human chain in front of the central library where they declared Lawmaker of Sylhet Constituency 3 and Senate Member of the SUST Mahmud Samad Chowdhury Kayes unexpected on the campus.
Later, they brought out a procession on the campus that paraded main points of the campus.
Meanwhile, university authorities in a statement said the comments made by the MP against Zafar Iqbal, author of science fiction and children’s literature, was not also lie, but indecent.
Recently, MP Mahmud Samad in a meeting at Fenchuganj said that nobody could sustain at the SUST for conspiracy of Zafar Iqbal. He also said Zafar Iqbal was instigating the movement which was going on against Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan. A tensed situation has been prevailing on the campus over the resignation of two departmental heads and 35 teachers from administrative posts, but the recent comments over Zafar Iqbal has made the situation much difficult. On April 20, 35 teachers resigned amid a movement by a pro-Awami League teachers’ panel demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.
The tension was generated on the campus on April 13 when 19 teachers from the physics department and geography and environment department of the university went to hold a talk with the VC over space allocation between the departments.
Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque, head of the physics department, and Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin, head of the geography and environment science department, resigned on the same day following the alleged misconduct of the VC.
