Blogger Ananta murder govt’s failure: Dr Zafar Iqbal

26Condemning the killing of blogger Ananta Bijoy, noted writer and teacher of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal on Wednesday said it is the failure of the government that it could not take action against the killers of bloggers,

“I don’t believe that the administration can’t hunt down the killers…it’s government’s failure,” he said while addressing a human chain programme on the university campus.

Some former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology under the banner of ‘Shahjalal University Press Club’ formed the human chain in front of its Central Library building at noon protesting the murder and demanding exemplary punishment of the killers.

“You must admit that you are not getting anything from the government. If you or we are killed the government will not do anything,” he said.

Criticizing the statement of Prime Minister’s son Sajib Wajed Joy over bloggers murder, he said his statement is a green signal to Islamists.”

“It seems from the statement he wants to say “you continue killing, the government won’t do anything against you, “he said.

Meanwhile, a half-day hartal, enforced by Sylhet Ganajagaran Mancha protesting the killing of blogger Ananta Bijoy, passed off peacefully in the city today (Wednesday).

The hartal supporters brought out a procession in Zindabazar area of the city around 11 am that terminated at that point after parading different roads, including Chouhatta, in the city.

Earlier, blogger Ananta Bijoy Das was hacked to death by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Subidbazar Bankalapara in the city on Tuesday.

Ananta Bijoy was also a writer in the ‘Muktomona blog’, founded by blogger Avijit Roy – who had been murdered two and half months ago after he came home from the USA.

Protesting the incident, Debashish Basu, a spokesman of Ganajagaran Mancha, called the half-day hartal in the city for Wednesday.
