Taranco meets Tarique

TarancoUnited Nations Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco has recently met with BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, highly-placed sources told The Independent yesterday. Tarique, also the elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, has been living in the United Kingdom since 2008. The meeting between Taranco and Tarique took place in London before the elections to Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City Corporations on April 28, said the sources, without elaborating further. They also said that Taranco’s meeting with Tarique, who is wanted in quite a few cases in Bangladesh, appeared to have annoyed the government. Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Dr AK Momen has already conveyed Dhaka’s dissatisfaction to Taranco about his meeting with a fugitive in the eyes of law, said the sources. Amidst widespread violence in Bangladesh, Taranco was tasked by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in February to be in contact with the government and the BNP to help them finding a solution to the political impasse with regard to election period governance in the country.
