Former Parliament speaker Sheikh Razzak Ali is dead

Ali’s family said he breathed his last around 2:45pm on Sunday at his residence at Faraziparha in Khulna City.

His sister-in-law Shamima Sultana Shilu told bdnews24.com the veteran politician was suffering from cancer.

He said the family was yet to decide about the time of his Namaz-e-Janaza.

Ali, a lawyer by training, was elected deputy speaker in 1991 and later Speaker of the Fifth Parliament.

He presided over the session which passed the Caretaker Government Bill on Feb 15, 1996.

Ali was elected MP with BNP tickets several times from Khulna.

He joined the BNP from the JaSaD and later switched to Liberal Democratic Party in 2006 before retiring from politics.

Ali was born at Hitampur village of Paikgachha Upazila in Khulna on Aug 28, 1928.

He did his post-graduation in Economics and Bangla Literature, and LLB from Dhaka University.

Ali started practising law at Khulna Judges Court in 1958 and was enrolled as a High Court lawyer in 1963.

He was elected president of Khulna Bar Association and acted as founding vice-principal of Khulna Law College. Later, he was made principal of the college.

He founded Khulna City Law College, Sundarban Model College, Saburannesa Girls College, Boyra Secondary School, Tutparha Secondary School, Paikgachha Degree College and Shaheed Zia
