Idris Ali’s bail turned down, next hearing on Ananta murder June 23

13A Sylhet court has turned down a bail plea by press photographer Idris Ali, arrested for his suspected involvement in the murder of blogger Ananta Bijoy Das.

Metropolitan Magistrate Farhana Yasmin on Wednesday rejected the appeal by Idris’ lawyer Abdul Gaffar.

The court scheduled a hearing for June 23, Gaffar told that Ali, a press photographer of Daily Sangbad and Sabuj Sylhet, had been sent to jail by the same court on June 15 after being produced at the end of seven days of grilling by the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dhaka.

Case investigation officer, the CID’s Dhaka Zone Inspector Arman Ali, said they got ‘important’ information by questioning Idris Ali during the remand.

The CID was analysing the information he provided, he said.

Ali was arrested on June 7 for his suspected involvement in the May 12 murder.

Four assailants hacked to death secular blogger Das in Sylhet in a manner similar to the killing of writer-blogger Avijit Roy, a little over two months earlier.

Das was an activist of the Ganajagaran Mancha, a forum demanding a ban on Islamist parties and a maximum penalty for convicted war criminals.

The 31-year-old used to blog on ‘Mukto-mona’, a website propagating rationalism and opposing fundamentalism started by Roy, who was killed in February in Dhaka.

The case was transferred to the CID from the Airport Police Station after they failed to arrest or identify any suspects in two weeks
