Tower Hamlets Mayor announces new cabinet

35Tower Hamlets Mayor, John Biggs announced his new cabinet to manage Tower Hamlets Council at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 24 June.
Mayor Biggs has appointed three deputy mayors with cabinet member duties from the Labour Party.
Cllr Sirajul Islam, is Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Performance; Cllr Rachael Saunders is Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services and the Third Sector; Cllr Shiria Khatun is Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Community Affairs. Cllr Khatun is also Deputy Leader of the Labour Group.
Six further cabinet members, also drawn from the Labour Party, are responsible for the remaining executive functions:
Cllr Rachel Blake is Cabinet Member for Strategic Development; Cllr Joshua Peck is Cabinet Member for Work and Economic Growth; Cllr Amy Whitelock Gibbs is Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Services; Cllr Asma Begum is Cabinet Member for Culture; Cllr Ayas Miah is Cabinet Member for the Environment; Cllr David Edgar is Cabinet Member for Resources.
Reflecting on the new administration, Mayor Biggs said:
“The new cabinet will enable sound leadership, expertise and transparency to shape our service delivery.
“We are committed to rebuilding our communities’ confidence; putting our residents first and protecting the local services that our residents rely on as government cuts bite.
“I am pleased to be leading a talented and hardworking executive and management team in Tower Hamlets.”
Tower Hamlets Mayor proposed that Cllr Abdul Mukith (Lab) continues as Speaker of the Council, and Cllr Rajib Ahmed (Lab) should be appointed Deputy Speaker of the Council.
