International Day against Drug Abuse observed in Sylhet

50The “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was observed, as part of the global programme, in the Sylhet  city in a befitting manner.
To mark the day, local narcotics control department in collaboration with district administration chalked out elaborate programmes.
The programmes, included painting and essay competition projecting the adverse impact of drug abuse and its harmful effect on juveniles and youths, rally and a discussion meeting.
A colourful rally was brought out in the city, which was participated by government officials, NGO representatives, students and different professional bodies to create awareness among the people against drug abuse.
A discussion meeting was held at Sylhet Zilla parished Auditorium in this connection with deputy commissioner of Sylhet Md. Joynal Abedin in the chair.
Sylhet Additional Divisional Commissioner Md. Mizanur Rahman addressed the discussion as the chief guest while DIG of Sylhet Mizanur Rahman,  Police Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan, Zilla Parished Administrator Motiur Rahman, ASP Nurul Islam attended as special guests.
Deputy director of Sylhet  sub-region of Narcotics Department Jahid Hossain Mulla delivered the speech of welcome.
The speakers at the discussion stressed the need for tougher law to curb the drug menace from the society.
They urged the law enforcement agencies to be vigilant against the illegal trafficking of the harmful drugs.
They also stressed the need for inclusion of harmful effect of drugs in the curriculum of text books.
Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners of painting and essay competition.
