Waterlogging chokes Dakshin Surma people

28People living in the low-lying areas of the city in Dakshin Surma also faced untold sufferings due to the waterlogging.

Lawai, Station road, Kodomtoly, Gutatikor, jalopara, Kujarkhola and Parbatpur areas of the city have already gone under knee-deep to waist-deep water and vehicular movement in these areas has been severely disrupted.

The rainwater also flooded city’s kitchen markets Dakshin Surma, slums areas and the ground floors of most buildings and markets.

Continuous encroachment on canals in Sylhet city and adjacent Surma River by influential is another reason behind the waterlogging, especially in the rainy season.

SCC Chief Excutive Anmul Habib said, “The city people suffer from acute waterlogging on a heavy or medium rainfall under the city corporation have ended up in grabbers’ hands”.

He expressed the hope that the waterlogging problem would be eased to a great extent after completing of some SCC projects.
