Attempts on to perpetuate AL power: Khaleda

24BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia alleged that there are various attempts to keep the ruling Awami League in power for a very long time.

“The Awami League government was installed through conspiracy in a planned way in a bid to destroy the nation, and attempts are now underway to perpetuate its power,” she said.

The BNP chief made the remarks at an iftar party hosted by Bangladesh Labour Party, an ally of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, at the Ladies Club in the capital on Tuesday.

She said the countrymen will have to awakeand fight against the present government and then democracy, human and fundamental rights and rule of law will be restored in the country.

“We are speaking of different problems of the country every day, but the government doesn’t pay any heed. Even there is no discussion in parliament now. Parliament has turned into gathering of entertainment. There is no opposition in parliament and no agenda for discussion there,” Khaleda said.

The former premier said, “A general election is immediately essential in the country to overcome the political crisis. The polls must be held in a neutral way. No rigging can take place in the polls in which every political party will participate.”

Branding the present Election Commission as backboneless, Khaleda Zia said the EC could not hold any fair election in the country as it cannot protest against the incumbent government.

She said that the incumbent government cannot tolerate any criticism of its misdeeds.

The BNP chairperson alleged that the ‘partisan’ government officials are being promoted by overtaking the worthy and skilled officials.

“Irregularity and corruption reportedly gripped police administration. Some police personnel have gone beyond everything while they are not caring law and order.

They think that they are beyond trial. As per their will, they are killing, making disappearance incidents and demanding extortion from people,” she said.

Khaleda lamented that Bangladeshi people are being killed across the border every day, but no one protests it now. “This illegal government does not protest the border killing. If anyone lodges protests, they take action against protesters.”

She alleged that the incumbent government has destroyed educational institutions while copying is going on in the examinations and pass rates have been increased.

BNP leaders Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, LDP leader Oli Ahmed, Abdul Latif Nejami of Islami Oikya Jote and Khelafat Majlish Ameer Maulana Mohammad Ishaq, among others, attended the iftar party.
