SUST teachers, BCL men take face off over VC’s removal Nahid urges end to impasse

SUST teachers, BCL men take face off over VC's removalA faction of pro-Awami League (AL) teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of the university unit took face-to-face position on Tuesday on the campus over its Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) removal.
The teacher’s faction continued their sit-in programme in front of the VC office for ninth consecutive days demanding immediate removal of VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuyan from his post.
On the other hand, leaders and activists of BCL under the banner of “General Students” also observed sit-in programme for two hours around 10:00am near the VC office with demand to continue the classes and examinations of the university smoothly protesting against the teacher’s unlawful movement. Sources concerned said that the agitated teachers alleged that the VC was involved in corruption, nepotism, financial opacity, irregularity and also misbehaved with teachers of the university.
The teachers, under the banner of “Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhakgon” have started movement since the mid of April demanding VC’s removal.
Following the movement of the teachers, the VC went on a two-month leave on April 23 showing his personal cause and returned on June 22 on the campus. Hearing the news, the teachers once again started movement and sit-in programme with the same demand. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, however, sent a letter to President of SUST Teacher’s Association Prof Kabir Hossain for minimizing the problem through holding a discussion with all.
The minister sent the letter after receiving a fax sent by a section of teachers of SUST who continued their movement in the campus demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor. The letter signed by Minister Nahid was received by Prof Dr M Kabir Hossain, the said president. Prof Kabir later confirmed the matter.
The VC told that, he remained firm on his decision and he wouldn’t resign from the post until he was ordered by the government.
