Pelted with brick chips, boy dies in Sylhet river

22A boy was killed as one of his friends hurled brick chips at him playfully in the Purakhai river in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet district on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Kadir Shahriar,12, son of Jahangir Uddin, a resident of Sarighat Sarufoud village of the upazila.
Locals sources said Shahriar along with his friend Jamil,9, son of Tendal Hajir, a resident of Tikar village of Goainghat upazila, went to the river for bathing at about 1:00 pm.
At one stage, Jamil hurled brick chips at Shahriar out of fun, leaving him unconscious.
Locals found the body of Shahriar floating in the river at about 4:00 pm.
Informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station Golok Chandra Basak confirmed the incident.
