Football match turns violent in Bangladesh, three brothers hacked to death in a brawl

29Three brothers have been beaten and hacked to death in a brawl during a football match in Bangladesh’s Noakhali, police say.

The incident on Sunday afternoon took place at Nateswar Union in the Sonaimurhi Upazila, Noakhali Superintendent of Police Md Ilias Sharif said.

Locals turned over one Fatema Begum to police for allegedly supplying sharp weapons used in the assault.

SP Sharif identified the victims as ‘Kamal’, 36, ‘Harun’, 32, and ‘Bablu’, 27, of Kazinagar village.

Quoting locals, he said the brothers had taken part in the friendly football match.

One of the brothers, Bablu, had a heated argument with opposition player ‘Rafique’ after scoring a goal.

Kamal and Harun rushed to intervene when Rafique’s teammates attacked Bablu.

Several others joined Rafique in the assault.

“They beat and hacked the three brothers to death,” the police officer said.

Their brother Morshed Alam claimed up to 12 locals and outsiders had taken part in the deadly assault.

He named some of the assaulters – ‘Rafique’, ‘Saddam’, ‘Anowar’, Golam Maula, ‘Belal’, ‘Touhid’ and ‘Azim’.
