Language movement activist Professor Laila Noor and 10 other women have been awarded Ananya Shirshadosh Sammanana 2014, in recognition of their contribution to their respective fields.
Ananya, a fortnightly magazine, formally conferred the awards to them at a function at the Krishibid Institute auditorium in Farmgate area in the capital on Saturday.
The awardees are Prof Laila Noor (language movement activist), Prof Farzana Islam (first female VC of the country), Prof Khaleda Ekram (first female VC of BUET), Meher Afroz Chumki (politics), Dr Tahmina Banu (medical science), Roksana Sultana (social work), Barrister Tureen Afroz (law and humanism), Nazia Andaleeb Preema (visual art), Flight Lieutenant Naima Hoque, Tamanna-e-Lutfi (first military pilots – jointly) and Salma Khatun (sports, cricket).
Moreover, Monowara Monu, journalist and women’s right activist, received an honourary mention award.
Ismat Ara Sadek, state minister of the Ministry of Public Administration, Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury, former adviser for the caretaker government and Monowara Hakim, women’s right activist, gave away the awards.
