Trading of sacrificial animals ahead of the Eid-Ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims, will be held at 10 cattle markets in the Sylhet city and its outskirts this year.
The cattle-markets are almost prepared and awaiting for sacrificial animals to come from different parts of the country like every year.
Trading at the markets started from Wednesday and get momentum next week, said sources.
Crime and traffic departments of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) have taken sufficient measures to check criminal activities, help smooth movement of traffic and buyers around the cattle markets.
Sacrificial animals mostly come from various parts of the country like Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj, Jessore, Kushtia, Satkhira and Faridpur to the markets for sale during the Eid.
SMP is going to deploy additional forces from today to ensure security during trade of sacrificial animals and trade of raw hides.
SMP Commissioner Kamrulahsan said sufficient security measures have been taken to ward off any unexpected incident like extortion and snatching and ensure hassle free environment in the cattle markets.
Temporary camps will be set up at each of the cattle markets while over 2,700 additional cops will be engaged to maintain law and order situation in and around the cattle markets and the city, he said.
Police will also keep counterfeit note detecting machines at the camps to help people for checking fake notes. Police will also help any intended person in transporting money, He said.
Additional Commissioner SM Rukonuddin said additional cops will be deployed for smooth movement of cattle-laden vehicles and vehicles to and from the cattle markets.
Besides, movement of long vehicles, trucks and covered vans will also remain off the road for seven days since three days before the Eid, added Rukonuddin.
