PM meets President ahead of her US tour

52Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday made a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister apprised the President of her probable programmes in the 70th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told UNB after the meeting.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaves here for New York on Wednesday morning on an eight-day official visit to the United States to attend the UNGA, UNB reports.

Abdul Hamid congratulated the Prime Minister as she won the United Nation’s top environmental accolade, Champions of the Earth award, in recognition of Bangladesh’s far-reaching initiatives to address climate change.

The President said it is a matter of pride for Bangladesh and Bangalee nation and it will inspire people in mitigating environmental pollution.

He also thanked Sheikh Hasina for declaring Mymensingh as the country’s new administrative division and hoped that the development of the region will be accelerated with the move.

On September 14, the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (Nicar) endorsed Mymensingh as a new division, raising the total number of administrative divisions of the country to eight.

Hasina conveyed the President eid greetings in advance as she will be in the USA during the Eid-ul-Azha.

On her arrival at Bangabhaban, President Abdul Hamid received the Prime Minister.

Secretaries and high officials of both the President and Prime Minister’s offices were present.
