Jatiya Party MP Hannan arrested for war crimes

39Law enforcers on Thursday afternoon arrested Jatiya Party Presidium Member MA Hannan, also an MP from Mymensingh, and his son for committing crimes against humanity in 1971.

Members of Banani Police Stations arrested them from city`s Gulshan area. They were later handed over to Gulshan Police Station.

Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against Hannan and seven others accused.

Rahima Khatun, widow of freedom fighter Abdur Rahman of Trishal, Mymensingh, filed the case against the three accused under the International Crimes (Tribunlas) Act 1973 in the first court of senior judicial magistrate of Mymensigh on May 19.

The two other accused in the case are Fakhruzzaman and Golam Rabbani.

According to the case document Hannan and his accomplices abducted Abdur Rahman from Bhanganmari char under Gouripur on October 9, 1971, took him to torture cell at Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh where they gouged out both his eyes and broke his right hand in broad daylight.

Later Hannan himself shot and killed freedom fighter Abdur Rahman and the accused persons in association with other accomplices looted and burnt Abdur Rahman’s house at Trishal.
