The Moulvibazar bus terminal could not be made useful even in 5 years since after its formal inauguration at the suburb of the district town.
The establishment, built at a cost of Tk 40 million and was formally inaugurated in 2010, but yet none of the buses use it while the authority is also not taking any effort to make it functional, a number locals and traders alleged.
The terminal looked almost deserted during a visit last week and no bus or people were seen around.
The rooms on the terminal building, allotted to the different private bus operators were seen shut.
The whole area looked dirty and garbage spread around.
Some walls had already developed cracks and tiles on places broken.
It was buit with a view to freeing the district town, through which the Dhaka-Sylhet highway passes through from traffic congestion years ago.
But, things remained the same as none of the inter district buses use it.
Still they park their vehicles in front of their counters on the road at places in the town, causing huge traffic congestion all the day.
The scene is same during the night too.
Helal Mia, owner of a tea stall, near the terminal said none of the buses enter the terminal and only a night guard is there to put the lights on in the evening.
The pourashava authority built it on the 3-acre land at a cost of Tk 39.87 million in 2009.
But it remained unused as yet due the lack of interest of the transport owners while the concerned officials took no serious steps for the purpose since after it was formally inaugurated on 1 November 1 of 2010.
Soon after the inauguration, only a few buses of the Dhaka-Moulvibazar, Sylhet-Habiganj and Sylhet-Comilla routes used it for a few days.
However, General Secretary of the Moulbibazar Zila Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity Md. Abdur Rashid said the terminal is constructed at a place off the district town.
Almost all the people avoid it to save Tk 20 to 30 in rickshaw or autorickshaw fares. The bus operators also not interested in it, he added.
The town dewellers have urged the authorities to force the bus operators for using the bus terminal with a view to resolving the traffic congestion.
