Saira Mohsin elected MP unopposed

37Awami League-backed candidate Saira Mohsin, wife of late Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali, has been elected uncontested in the by-election to Moulvibazar-3 constituency.

Regional election officer SM Eajharul Haque, also the returning officer of the election, announced the unofficial result on Sunday, the last day of withdrawing candidacy, as there was no other candidate in the race, UNB reports.

Earlier on November 14, EC cancelled the nomination papers of four out of five candidates, except Saira Mohsin.

On September 14, Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali, who was MP from Moulvibazar-3 parliamentary, died at Singapore General Hospital at the age of 67.

Following the death of Mohsin Ali, EC fixed December 8 for the by-polls in order to fill up the vacant seat.
