Kibria killing: Court accepts charge sheet in a case

29A tribunal here on Tuesday took cognisance of the charge sheet in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act in connection with the ex-Finance Minister SAMS Kibria murder.

Judge of the Habiganj Special Tribunal-1 Atabullah accepted the charge sheet against 32 people, including former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan.

The tribunal also issued warrants for the arrest of 10 absconding accused in the case and fixed February 29 for the next hearing.

During the hearing on Tuesday, 11 accused, including Mufti Abdul Hannan, were produced before the court amid tight security while Babar, newly elected Habiganj municipality mayor GK Gaus, suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury were not produced before the tribunal.

On September 13 last, a Sylhet court indicted 32 people, including former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and Ariful Haque, in the murder case filed over the incident.

Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila on January 27, 2005.

Awami League leader Abdul Mazid Khan filed two cases – one for murder and another under the Explosives Substances Act – with the Habiganj Police Station the following day.
