Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB) has started implementing a major project for covering the uncovered rural areas for electrification in the Sylhet division. The Sylhet divisional project and infrastructure development programme began this fiscal 2016-2017 and has been targeted for completing by December 31 of 2018, a senior official informed.
Superintending Engineer of the REB’s Sylhet division Md. Nurul Haque said, the Tk 14.17 billion project would help covering the uncovered villages under the 5 Palli Bidyut Samities (PBS) of 4 districts in Sylhet division.
The 3-year project includes construction of 7300 km 33 KV lower voltage line, construction of 12 sub-stations, augmentation of 19 others, construction of 3 switching stations and construction of 2 multi-storied buildings etc for ensuring smooth supply of electricity. Besides, 200 old and overloaded transformers would be replaced by new ones, the official added.
Of the total, 2600 km new lines would be constructed in Sunamganj PBS, 400 km in Sylhet PBS-1, 900 km in Sylhet PBS-2, 900 km in Habiganj PBS and 2200 km in Moulvibazar PBS. When implemented, about 320,000 subscribers in rural areas would come under the supply coverage.
The main purpose is to expand the rural electrification programme in Sylhet division, the official added.
The ECNEC on May 3 this year approved the expansion of rural electrification operations in Sylhet division project alongside developing physical facilities with Tk 14.17 billion (Tk 1,417.10 crore), aiming to provide o.32 million new rural power connections, an official in the capital told this correspondent.
The major works include, acquisition of construction of 2 multistoried buildings at a cost of Tk 580.44 million each, procurement of vehicles of different types at a cost of Tk 30 million and some 7.65 acres of land acquisition etc. The buildings include a 6-storey office building at Dakshin Surma area in Sylhet and a 10-storey building at the REB headquarters.
Of the total Tk 14,171 million, GOB contribution is Tk 14070 million and the rest Tk 99.9 million would be from the REB and PBSs own contribution.
