Nightlife review in Tower Hamlets

20Residents packed out St Hilda’s Community Centre to tell Mayor John Biggs and London’s Night Csar, Amy Lamé what was good and bad about

nightlife in Tower Hamlets. People said Tower Hamlets was a “great place to live” commending its

“buzziness, street art, clubs and culture”. But others said more needed to be done by the police to curb anti-social behaviour resulting from night

time revellers. John Pierce, Chair of Overview and Scrutiny who organised the meeting,

asked for recommendations to improve the management of nightlife in Tower Hamlets. Residents said people should be allowed to stay in pubs after last orders,

so crowds on the streets at closing time would be better managed.

Their calls for more consultation on the London vision for the night time economy resulted in the offer of a Night Time Economy Surgery by Amy

Lamé. Mayor Biggs said: “It is vital that we find balance in the Night Time Economy. It includes

some great opportunities for employment and culture, but it shouldn’t impact negatively on local people.”

The Mayor added that he would like the council to issue more penalty

notices to people who behaved badly.

Councillor John Pierce added:

“We have talked to residents, businesses, the police and representatives

from health, planning and licensing to understand the impact of the night

time economy in Tower Hamlets. We will now develop a series of

recommendations to improve the approach to managing nightlife in

Tower Hamlets.”
