BCL men beat up teacher in Sylhet

A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Sylhet city unit beat up a teacher of Britania Women’s College in front of the college in Taltola area yesterday.

Asad Chowdhury, a teacher of the philosophy department, also an alleged former Islami Chhatra Shibir leader, took treatment at Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Witnesses said six to eight BCL activists led by Sylhet city unit Organising Secretary Sajal Das attacked Asad around 2:00pm.

At the time, the BCL activists carrying billhooks were asking Asad to say that he will not engage in Shibir politics ever, they added. The BCL activists also took video footage of the incident.

Abdul Halim Tusher, Sylhet city unit BCL secretary, said the BCL activists beat up Asad in retaliation of a Shibir attack on some BCL activists on August 7.

Gausul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said they have heard about the incident. “But we could not find anyone while visiting the spot or the hospital.”

“If anyone files a complaint, we will take action,” he added.
