Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Golam Kibria has said steps are being taken to prevent any possible attempt to smuggle rawhides from Sylhet on the Eid day and after. This is why none would be permitted to take unprocessed rawhides from the Sylhet city and its adjoining areas that time. However, the genuine traders would be allowed to take the rawhides to Dhaka after minimum processing with salt, he added.
The commissioner was addressing an exchange of views meeting with the rawhide traders and others at his conference room yesterday afternoon. He however assured of providing allout assistance to the skin traders. The official also said sufficient number of mobile teams of lawmen would be deployed to prevent all petty crimes on the roads while assuring strong action against extortion of all types from the cattlehead traders as well as the rawhide traders.
Police would be vigilant to prevent all unwanted incidents and help safe transportation of the sacrificial animals at all points now on.
Leading cattle traders, transport vehicle owners association officials and Imam Samity officials also joined it.
The skin and rawhide traders at the meeting however said, almost there was no scope of rawhide smuggling to India through the Sylhet border since there was no tannery on the Indian state of Assam and Meghalaya. But they sought police and administration’s assistance to prevent any move to smuggle the item through Akhaura borders from Sylhet.
