When SUST students protested the plague of hijacking rife in the area, they were attacked by angry workers
In the last one month, more than 20 students of Sylhet’s Shahjalal University of Science and Technology have been victim to hijacking in the main gate.
Students protested against the incident on Monday, blocking the Sylhet-Sunamganj road. All vehicular movement was stopped for an hour. Later, CNG workers ambushed students. At the order of Jalalabad police station OC Shafiqul Islam, the situation was brought under control by firing blanks.
Assistant Provost of Shahporan Hall Ashish Kumar Banik, police constable Sohel Rana, fourth year student of business administration Al-Amin, third year student of public administration department Towhid Ahmed, and 10 others were injured. They were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
According to campus and proctor office sources, in the last one month, more than 20 people have been hijacked in the Akhalia area adjacent to the university. It is known that the students of the campus have lost valuable documents including mobile phones. Some people were also injured in the hijacking incident.
SUST Proctor Zahir Uddin Ahmed said they lifted the block after requesting the students to lift the blockade. But later the workers attacked the teacher and students. He demanded to take action against the attackers.
Jalalabad police station OC Shafiqul Islam said: “We will take action if we receive the complaint. But now the situation is calm.”
