Emdad Rahman : In an effort to improve health and wellbeing some local residents in Barking & Dagenham have set up a running club for the residents of the Leftley Estate and beyond.
For the last six months the “Walk & Talk” running sessions around the perimeter of Mayesbrook Park have taken place every Saturday morning for an hour.
Organiser and Leftley Sports Club member Zoinul Abidin said: “ We have been running for a few months now and the turnout has been much better then expected. Apart from running its a great opportunity to catch up with and also make new friends.”
The weekly sessions are for everyone – beginners, joggers, veterans and there is no minimum standard or level of experience required.
Abidin added: “It’s fine to walk a bit, jog a bit, and chat if you like. As the name suggests, it’s about helping participants to get started and to get the community running again.”
All cycling and running sessions are completely free of charge.
In addition to the Saturday activities a new “Dads & Lads” football session has also started on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am and there are exciting plans for canoeing on the lake.
Readers are requested to help spread the word by joining in and recommending the club to friends, family and neighbours who would be interested in participating in fun group activities in a relaxed setting which provides a platform for residents to get to know one another and work together on their health, wellbeing and enjoyment.
There is no prior booking or application – Just turn up and enjoy. The meeting point for each activity is 10.30 am at the Mayesbrook Park gates on The Drive.
