Poverty rate cut to 23 percent: Speaker

Habiganj Correspondent : Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Saturday said that the present government has been able to reduce the poverty rate from 43 percent to 23 percent in the country.

Speaking as chief guest at the annual function of Shayestaganj High School in Habiganj, Shirin Sharmin said “We have achieved the gender equality by attaining the millennium development goals. Now the girls are advancing more in education.”

Computer labs are being introduced in educational institutions across the country while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has established education development trust for all the students, she mentioned.

Ashok Madhav Rai, convener and former secretary of the festival committee presided over the programme while special guest Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain, lawmakers Adv Md Abu Zahir, Abdul Majid Khan and Mahbub Ali were in the chair.
