Hijras want steps against people impersonating Hijras

Sylhet Office : Hijras on Sunday sought immediate legal steps against a group of people for impersonating Hijras and committing sexual offences and torturing the transgender persons.

They made the demand in a petition submitted to the Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner in the afternoon.
SMP officers told that a group of Hijras under the banner of Sylhet Hijra Kalyan Sangstha, a welfare organisation of the local transgender people, staged demonstration in front of the SMP headquarters at Naiorpool in the city and submitted a petition to press the demand.
The organisation leaders complained that several persons were gathering teenage boys of different schools and colleges at Jalalabad Park beside the Keane Bridge area in each afternoon and sending them as sex workers impersonating them as Hijras to different clients.
They claimed that the patrons or pimps of the ‘fake hijras’ have physically tortured the real Hijras several times as they protested against the offence.
They also demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the offenders and their patrons.
Sylhet Hijra Kalyan Sangstha president Aleya Hijra, Beauty Hijra, Lipi Hijra, Saju Hijra, Rani Hijra and Pakhi Hijra, among others, were present when the petition was submitted to the office of SMP commissioner Golam Kibria, the Kalyan Sangstha officials said.
When contacted, the SMP additional deputy commissioner confirmed of receiving the memorandum and said police would take steps if the allegations were found true.
