EC finds no grounds to cancel 25 Jamaat-affiliated candidates’ nominations

The commission will not cancel their candidatures

The Election commission has said it does not have any legal grounds to cancel the candidatures of 25 BNP candidates, which it was asked to scrutinize by the High Court.

The commission announced on Sunday evening that the candidatures cannot be cancelled as they are taking part in the election under BNP’s banner and with the symbol of BNP. Their candidatures will therefore stay in place.

The High Court earlier issued a directive that asked the commission to make a decision on the legality of 25 Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidates vying the 11th general election with BNP’s electoral symbol.

The High Court cancelled Jamaat’s registration with the Election Commission on August 1, 2013.
