The namaz-e-janaza was held at the Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj
The second namaz-e-janaza of Syed Ashraful Islam, former Awami League general secretary and public administration minister of the previous Cabinet, has been held in Kishoreganj.
Supporters and well-wishers numbering in the thousands gathered to pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Earlier, the first namaz-e-janaza was held at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 10:30am.
President Abdul Hamid also took part in the janaza while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with other senior female leaders of the Awami League, were present at the Sangsad Bhaban premises.
His body was flown to Kishoreganj via helicopter for the second janaza around 12pm. A third janaza will be held at Anjuman Eidgah grounds in Mymensingh around 2pm.
He will then be flown back to the capital and laid to rest at the Banani graveyard after the Asr prayers.
The 68-year-old veteran politician passed away at Bumrungrad International Hospital’s Critical Care Medicine Unit in Bangkok, Thailand on January 3.
Suffering from stage four lung cancer, the former Awami League general secretary had been undergoing treatment at the Thai hospital for the past few months.
