Mayor John Biggs unveils new community mosaic created by Whitechapel residents

On Saturday 27 April 2019, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs unveiled a new colourful community mosaic in the grounds outside the Christian Street Community Hub in Whitechapel.

The mosaic is one of three artworks created by local residents as part of SocietyLinks’ Creative Communities project, supported by the council and funded through contributions from developments taking place in the area.

The mosaic features a collage of local landmarks, including the Tower of London, and is set into the paving adjacent to Rope Walk Gardens for the community to enjoy for decades to come.

The launch event was part of a much wider community fun day that included a live performance from Pollyanna, a drama company, a bouncy castle, BBQ, refreshments and a special exhibition about the mosaic’s creation.

John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said:

“It was great to see the wonderful artwork created by residents and now on display by the Christian Street Community Hub in Whitechapel.

“As well as providing a unique and attractive display which brightens up the area, the mosaics have worked wonderfully well to help bring residents of all ages together, forming strong and lasting friendships.”
