DHAKA: Although the e-passport was supposed to be launched in July this year, it is uncertain for the government to initiate the e-passport even by September. However, the home ministry said the much-awaited e-passport is expected to launch in next October.
A renowned company of Germany is working on e-passport and e-gate in Bangladesh, said Home Ministry’s Security Services Department.
According to sources, e-passport is expected to be launched in July but there have been various minor complexities, including equipment setup. Some errors are traced in the software and equipment setup. As a result, there is also uncertainty about launching in October.
Joint Secretary to the Department of Security Services of the ministry (Outgoing-1) Md Munim Hassan on Tuesday (September 3) told Banglanews, “We are completely ready in our part. It is expected to launch in October. As the whole process will be completed online, efforts are underway to make it flawless. Meanwhile, works are going on to set up machineries at Agargaon, airport and Uttara.
The Home Ministry said the e-passport will be for a period of five and 10 years. Of the two categories passports, one has 48 pages while another one 72 pages. The fee will be higher for those who take a 72 page passport. Already the required fee for the passport has been fixed.
Under the project ‘Introduction of Bangladesh E-Passport and Automatic Border Control Management’, e-passport will be given to the citizens. The total cost of the project is Tk 4,636 crore.
The Department of Immigration and Passport will implement the whole project from July in 2018 to June in 2028, with full government funding. A total of 30 million passports will be made in 10 years.
Of these, two million will be made in Germany. As a result, the passports of those who apply first will be made from Germany. Passport will be for a period of five and 10 years.
